YEARNING FOR SPIRIT By Chad Shober

What does it mean to YEARN FOR SPIRIT? How do we YEARN FOR SPIRIT? Why are there so many of us that want to be connected to Spirit? How do we know if we are connected to Spirit? These are a few questions that clients, close friends and myself have asked. I think religious beliefs and life experiences will determine how one would answer these questions and I think all answers are valid. I do

not think that there is only one belief system or one religion that can connect us to Spirit. We all come from different cultures, different religious views, different families and a set of values that shape who we are. They are the building blocks for how we live our lives, how we think and how we behave. They are the structure for understanding life and the choices that we make. Some- times our beliefs from childhood change when we become adults and I think this is a way of find- ing who we are as individuals. What in our lives may cause us to YEARN FOR SPIRIT? For myself and for almost everyone that I work with, the yearning comes out of deep emotional pain. There seems to be a gut feeling that there has to be more to life than the emotional pain being experienced. I have also worked with individuals that were not experiencing emotional pain but they still had the same gut feeling that there has to be more than their current understanding of life. I do not think that you have to be in emotional pain to want to connect to Spirit. It has only been my experience both personally and professionally that emotional pain seems to be a way to YEARN FOR SPIRIT. So how do we know that we are connecting to Spirit? I like the way the author Paulo Coelho explains it in his book The Alchemist. If you have not read this book I recommend it, especially if you are wanting to begin the path of connecting to Spirit. In the story a young boy learns to follow the omens or the signs to know if he is on the path. In time he begins to recognize the omens. I think the same is true in our own lives. Omens can show up in different ways in our lives such as repetitive numbers, as dreams in our sleep or as a theme that keeps repeating itself. How do the omens show up in your life? How do you know when you are listening to Spirit and that you are on the path that is best for you? I have observed those in emotional pain and how difficult it is for them to recognize Spirit. Only when they have chosen to stop seeing themselves in pain have they been able to see the signs that connect them to Spirit. I know how difficult it was for me to see Spirit when the pain was overwhelming, yet I kept yearning to be connected to Spirit more than anything else in my life. Out of my desire of wanting Spirit I wrote the following words: My soul aches for your touch your lingering embrace and your soft caress. To be one with you is what I desire. Cradle me in your arms so I know that I am loved. Take my hand in yours and remind me who I am. Touch me with a love that can only come from you. Consume me with your Light so that I may be whole.

At the time I wrote this poem I ached for Spirit. I wanted something more for my life and I believed that I was capable of living differently.

One of my favorite poets and mystics, Rumi, wrote the following: The Breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you. Don’t go back to sleep.

You must ask for what you really want. Don’t go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth across the doorsill where the two worlds touch.

The door is round and open. Don’t go back to sleep.

Do not stop YEARNING FOR SPIRIT because in your yearning you will find your way. In your yearning you may find that Spirit was there the entire time.
