Duke took some time from his schedule to respond to some questions posed
by School Transportation News ranging from the bittersweet experience of the company’s centennial celebration activities, to the effectiveness of the correc- tive measures put in place. He also commented on what is on the horizon as the company enters its second century.
School Transportation News: Congratulations on turning 100. What does this milestone say about Durham School Services and the people who have worked there through the years? David Duke: Reaching 100 years is a very special accomplishment. We’ve been fortunate to positively impact millions of students over the years, and it has everything to do with the amazing people who’ve driven our buses, taken care of them, dispatched them and all of the other jobs and tasks necessary to get students to school safely and on-time each day. It’s also about building the trust of the communities, parents, students and school districts we serve by providing safe transportation. Safety is really the foundation of all that we do. Every day, we transport more than one million students. We consistently seek opportunities to build on and enhance our approach to safety, including the use of new technologies such as DriveCam and the rollout of a feedback management system.
STN: What impact has the tragedy last November had on your celebration plans and activities? Duke: Te accident changed our company, our people and me, person-
ally. Te impact has and will continue to have an effect on the Chattanooga families, the community and our team. We’ve taken industry-leading steps to enhance the safety of our operations throughout our entire North American business.
allisontransmission.com STN: You said in a video after the Chattanooga tragedy that “We are heart-
broken by the tragedy in Tennessee, I am personally heartbroken.” What is the mood in the company six months later, and did your personal heartbreak impact your decision to step down as CEO? Duke: Part of the grieving process is beginning to heal. Tis will take
