San Jose Unified School District in California’s Silicon Valley is considered the first—and to date only—adopter of the renew- able diesel for school buses. Andrew DeBolt, the district’s lead equipment manager, said San Jose sold the last of its remaining CNG buses and has been using HDRD in all its 105 school buses for over a year, adding that there “have been no issues and no complaints.” One obstacle to wide-scale adoption of renewable diesel is the

relatively small number of fuel providers. Most availability has been on the West Coast, especially in California where as of last summer 31 stations carried HDRD. DeBolt said San Jose purchas- es from Golden Gate Petroleum, a supplier for NESTE of Finland, the world’s largest renewable diesel producer and the largest source of HDRD with refineries in Europe and Indonesia. “Te fleets that use it on the West Coast like it better than diesel as it behaves better in modern clean diesel engines,” added Rick Wal- lace, a senior policy analyst at the Oregon Department of Energy. He added that two companies in Louisiana produce the fuel as

well as two in California. While interest in HDRD is growing, he agreed that it is still not readily available. A bigger issue is getting a low-carbon version of the fuel. “A large percentage of the fuel refined in Indonesia is produced

from palm oil by products known as PFAD (palm fatty acid distil- late),” he explained. “California and Oregon clean fuel programs have yet to approve a pathway for PFAD, however it is believed to be a higher carbon pathway than crude based diesel.” ●

Propane Industry Eyes Even Lower NOx Emissions First, it achieved California Air Resources Board and EPA

certification that its propane-autogas engine for Class 4-7 vehicles including school buses meets the optional 0.05 g/bhp-hr standard for emissions of oxides of nitrogen, or NOx. Now, ROUSH CleanTech says the alternative fuel is getting even cleaner. Te propane drivetrain and fuel system provider said sometime next

year it expects to reach the optional 0.02 g/bhp-hr standard. And not too far off in the future renewable propane holds the promise of zero emissions, says Todd Mouw, vice president of sales and marketing. “Tere’s a pathway there for renewable propane. Now, I think part of the initial issue is trying to figure out what does the dollar value look like?” he adds.
