Renewable Diesel Options Increase for Student Transporters

WRITTEN BY RYAN GRAY | RYAN@STNONLINE.COM S

chool bus operators who want to stay with diesel can still go the alternative and renewable fuel route. Cummins, Inc. announced and approved last month synthetic paraffinic fuel for use in its B6.7 and L9 school bus en-

gines. Paraffinic fuel, otherwise known as hydrogenated renewable diesel (HDRD) or green diesel, is derived from hydro-treated soy, rapeseed, sunflower, oil palm, algae and waste oils as well as gas to liquids and biomass to liquids. It is not biodiesel, which undergoes a completely different refining process. Te National Renewable Energy Laboratory classifies paraf- finic fuel as chemically identical to conventional diesel fuel and a first-generation diesel fuel. It also qualifies as an EPAct fuel when used 100-percent replacement for conventional diesel and is approved under renewable fuel standards. As such, paraffinic or clean diesel requires no additional engine maintenance, additives or equipment, a point echoed by Cummins on June 1, which added that paraffinic diesel has the same stability and cold properties as conventional diesel, but also reduces GHG emissions by 40 percent to 90 percent over a vehi- cle’s lifecycle. Te National Renewable Energy Lab has reported that this is due to the high cetane number and low aromatic content of HDRD. Specifically, Cummins adopted European standard EN 15940, a consensus specification for paraffinic diesel for use in vehicles as either a blend or a 100-percent finished clean fuel. EN 15940 is compatible with ASTM D975, the spec- ification for Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel in the U.S. Te engine manufacturer made its announcement only after completing an 18-month analysis of paraffinic fuel performance with diesel oxidation catalysts, diesel particulate filters and selec- tive catalyst reduction. All testing confirmed that clean diesel performed on par with conventional diesel.

A few tips to ensure

highest performance from your A/C this summer

1) Keep A/C on max

By turning the a/c to it’s highest setting a greater volume of air will be pushed into the cabin replacing hot air with cold air.

2) Open The Window

Keeping a window cracked an inch or two while parked will ensure better air circulation 3) Defrost

If you smell dirty socks coming from the vents, I recommend running the defrost for a few minutes to remove the smell until you can replace the filter.
