A main focus this month is on school bus contracting, but we also look at the vital subject of driver as well as attendant training. Te following comments are responses to the latest School Transportation News survey. Managing fleets while simultaneously meeting standards is complicated for school transportation operations. Te survey elicited responses that detail the latest innovations implemented for school transportation operations for driver/attendant training. Read more on driver and attendant training starting on page 22.

“Over the years there has been a change on the way training is delivered

to driver and staff. New drivers and attendants are given a curriculum that focuses on all the aspects of their job with classroom and behind the wheel training. Online training has emerged with courses for student management and other topics that were traditionally taught in the classroom. We offer additional training with evacuation scenarios and a refresher training session for current staff during breaks in the school year.” —Todd Duncan Assistant Director of Transportation (Ret.) Washoe County School District in Reno, Nevada

In addition to mandatory state training, we provide: 1) Monthly training sessions on specific topics; 2) Staff now have district emails and we send safe- ty articles; 3) Training for new hires and veterans through Driver Improve- ment Plans; 4) Re-training for all accidents and incidents regardless of pre- ventability; 5) Subscriptions to National Safety Council Defensive Driving modules to include latest concept affecting driving and also to vary the voices of training; and, 6) Our safety leaders perform daily on-the-road observation of driving performances, such as following buses, staging observations at railroad crossings or where we may be experiencing some issues. —Jack Coxen Supervisor of Transportation Brewster Central School District, New York
