Eric Kissel, director of transportation for the Laveen Elementary School District west of Phoenix, said he certifies all his drivers in Crisis Prevention Institute training for de-escalating issues on the bus.


Tomas Bramley, director of transportation operations at Community Consolidated School District 15 in Palatine, Illinois, said he trains his drivers in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, or PBIS. Other districts employ experienced special-education classroom teachers to share tips and techniques on proper behavior management on the school bus. Sending staff to state sponsored trainings is another effective way of training drivers and aides. According to Robert Sutton, director of transportation for Augusta USD 402 in Augusta, Kansas: “It’s a real morale booster. It gives them a chance to be the expert by sharing what they’ve learned with other drivers.” ●
