EASTLINK IS THE SAFEST FREEWAY IN MELBOURNE EastLink is Melbourne’s safest freeway due to its high quality of design and operations, with a casualty crash rate of just 2.6 motor vehicle accidents resulting in injury per 100 million vehicle kilometres travelled. This is significantly lower than Melbourne’s other urban freeways.
EASTLINK TRAFFIC CONTROL ROOM The 24/7 EastLink Traffic Control Room has two operators on duty at all times. The comprehensive network of video cam- eras allows the full length of EastLink to be monitored. Vehi- cle detection loops throughout EastLink monitor traffic flow. Overlooking the Traffic Control Room is the Incident Room, equipped for use by Police, Fire and Ambulance liaison officers.

EASTLINK INCIDENT RESPONSE Two EastLink Incident Response vehicles are kept on standby and on average, a response team will arrive at an incident site within five minutes. EastLink undertakes most maintenance activities on the road and has a fleet of more than 20 vehicles on call to assist with major incidents as required.
EASTLINK TUNNEL SAFETY Automatic incident detection cameras in the EastLink tun- nels detect any variation from normal traffic flow to alert operators. Speed limits can be varied and lanes closed to manage incidents. The tunnels can be closed remotely and cross passages between the tunnels can be used for the safe evacuation of drivers and their passengers. A fire detection and deluge system is controlled from the
Traffic Control Room to target any fire. The tunnel ventilation system, which ensures the quality of air within the tunnels and at the tunnel portals, can be used to clear smoke.
