Mel Murphy is the author of children’s book,

“The Barnyard Bully.”. It is a simple, cute book for ages 2 to 10 geared to early reading and learning. It explores the importance of being nice and not to be a bully. It’s fun to be nice to people! We are not all alike. If we teach our children at a young age to respect, be patient and understand people and children (and those with disabilities), We need to talk, educate children to communicate with all in a peaceful manner. Let us not breed violence with violence but

teach our children to respect others views and talk things over. Teach them to report bullying to proper authorities, schools, teachers, and most important you as a parent.

Here is a cute synopsis of the book! There’s a mean young bull in the barnyard. He

isn’t nice to the other animals, and they call him Barnyard Bully. He kicks the chickens’ ball away from them and chases the pigs out of their mud hole. Bad Barnyard Bully! The next day, Barnyard Bully wants to play with

the chickens. They tell him no. They don’t play with bullies! The bull is very sad. Maybe he should- n’t be so mean. But does he have the courage to tell his friends that he is sorry?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mel was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri . He is now retired and waited years to write a chil-

dren’s book. He wanted to write one but just did- n’t know what he wanted to write about until after retirement. Mel took a job as a custodian in an elementary school where he witnessed bullying. Mel states that when he cleaned classrooms and the libraries at the schools, he never saw any books on bullying, therefore he felt there was a definite need for books exploring the subject. After moving to Florida, he met a young man

who liked to draw, so Mel gave the young man his story and he created the illustrations. Mel states, “I really liked the idea that a young boy had his intake of the book. And with this partnership of this young man, my wife and myself; we made this book possible. Because I believe in children, I want to dedicate 2% of sales to St. Jude’s Children’s Hos- pital and start a college fund for our young illustra- tor. I am also planning on making a possible three book series.” Each book will offer the opportunity of another

young boy or girl that will help to illustrate it. Mel states, “I know one book will not stop bullying, but we need to start somewhere. I am an advocate of actually making it a curriculum in school starting with a book such as mine and have a talk and an- swer time. My book is also library certified for schools so the librarian or teachers of the school may use their card to purchase to have in their school classrooms or school libraries. I think this is an excellent starting tool. Let’s get it started!”
