she attends her classes and how much her English has greatly improved. Her case- worker vouched for her. She was a good prisoner and good prisoners can earn days off their sentences, as many as 10 days a month until those days add up to 25 percent of their sentence. So far, Hassania has earned one year and 10 days. Now, it was their turn.

“She isn’t sorry!” blurted Joe Miranda. She never apolo- gized. She had gone to prison for stabbing Jerry, but she would hurt her sons many times too. She kicked Joe down the stairs and chased him with a knife. Next, was the relative who wanted to see her released, John Miranda, a son of Hassania’s, not related to Jerry. “I per- sonally think she does need to get out of here,” John Miranda stated. “I’ll make sure she is doing what she needs to do.” Hassania gave him a smile. Jerry Miranda spoke up commenting, “my life has been miserable. Imag- ine going back to work and facing co-workers. Imagine everyone talking about you.” Others thought he was an em- barrassment to the academy. Some wondered how he could let a woman victimize him. Jerry Miranda felt like he

women killed by their hus- bands and now forgotten and how his co-workers saved him. He felt like he was alive for many reasons. “Maybe I’m the dead person who’s stand- ing up for them,” he said. “Hassania Miranda always re- garded herself as the victim. I made you put a knife in my back? I made you chase the children around with a knife?” he said. Hassania stated that she did want to apologize to her son as she rose and took a step toward Joe. He scooted his chair backward, ducking his head as if she might hit him. Hassania began to cry. “I think that’s the first time in my life I’m talking sober to them, she stated. “I know what I did is not good.” Curtis Devin then made a decision later that afternoon: Parole denied. When asked Jerry Miranda how he felt about the decision he stated, “It will never be over.”
