Women’s Sports Trust launches to


A new grant giving body has been launched to raise the profile and to change the per- ception of women’s sport in the UK. Women’s Sport Trust (WST) will be

Te Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee will under- take an inquiry into women and sport in the UK. During the process the


committee will investigate what barriers remain to wom- en’s participation in sport and how to overcome these. The focus will be on


facilities, training, finance (including sponsorship and prize money) and media cov- erage – as well as the variety of sports on offer to girls at school. Te inquiry comes on the first anniversary of the London 2012 Games and at a time when the legacy of the Games is being questioned. In a statement, the committee said: “It was

Homeless FA handed Big Society Award


Homeless FA, England’s national foot- ball charity, has been given a Big Society Award for its work in improving the lives of homeless people. Te charity uses foot- ball as the catalyst to give homeless people in England the opportunity to develop their skills and abilities, to gain self-respect and confidence, to improve their health and ultimately to transform their lives. Since it was set up in 2012, the Homeless

Rugby stadium plans approved for Edinburgh


Plans to build a community rugby stadium on the site of the first ever international rugby match in Edinburgh, Scotland, have been approved. City of Edinburgh Council gave the green light to the plans, submitted by rugby league club Edinburgh Academicals, which will see a £8m stadium being built in Stockbridge – where an inter- national between Scotland and England was played on 27 March 1871. Facilities at the 5,000-capacity venue


will include a rugby museum, conferenc- ing facilities and nine retail units.


£40m legacy windfall for grassroots sport


A further £40m ($62m, €47m) of National Lottery fund- ing will be made available to grassroots sport during 2014- 17. Sport England said it will extend its Inspired Facilities Olympic and Paralympic leg- acy fund, designed to improve local facilities – from new playing surfaces to floodlights and better changing rooms. So far, 1,361 grassroots


sports facilities have ben- efitted in the two years since Inspired Facilities was launched, with a total of £69.9m being invested. Sport England chair Nick Bitel said: “A year

Majority say Olympic budget was money well spent


More than two thirds of the UK public feel that the £8.77bn cost of hosting the London 2012 Olympics was worth it, according to a survey of 3,218 adults conducted by research consultancy firm ComRes for the BBC. Te findings also suggest that 74 per cent would
