In a world where few artists are recognized and even fewer have a following of collectors, how has this self-represented artist made a living from his artistic talents for over 30 years?


In 1980, at 20 years of age, Binkley began molding his art career. He did not have a circle of collectors large enough to sustain his business, so he worked nights as a sales clerk in a grocery store. This left the days free for him to carve and develop his sculpture business. As he was just starting out, he made cold calls to commercial galleries in Vancouver, and to high- end gift shops. He was successful in getting his


work into several gift stores on a consignment basis, from Vancouver to Whistler, BC. He also found representation in a few commercial galleries in Vancouver.


Alongside these consignment-based marketing venues, Binkley made a commitment to have self-representation a part of his career. He learned to promote himself by hosting a regular annual exhibition at a location where his growing circle of collectors could always find him - his studio gallery, which has always been located in North Vancouver. In 1985, he purchased his current home to which he has added his studio,
