JH: The kinds of values that accrue for the public are I think many-fold and you probably would agree with that. What would you say to people who say public art is a waste of time and money and we’re better off spending it on sewers? LS: There is an answer to that. Art and culture of any kind is big business. It helps other people in other businesses to get work, like metal workers, welders, whatever, because not all artists make their own artwork. There is a company in Calgary that does a lot of artwork for artists based here in Vancouver. It gets the economics of the municipalities rolling and it is also a big tourist draw. You can’t look at it on the basis of whether it is worthwhile, or if we should give our money to the people who have no food.
JH: Yes, just for interest sake – I did a project in 2002 – an international sculpture symposium in 8 communities in the Interior of BC. We raised 2 million dollars for it and had the University conduct a study. They found that
there was an economic spin-off of about 30 million dollars. So economic spin-offs are pretty tremendous. LS: There you go.
LH: Leesa – thank you so much for this interview. I really enjoyed talking with you and hope to hear more about what you’re doing. LS: Yes – I hope to meet you sometime.

“I think artists need to be linked into the City of Vancouver ListServ Site. They need to be there because all the calls get e-mailed out automatically. Also they need to check the 4Culture site in Seattle and the Washington State Arts Commission.”
