Nurturing the engineers of the future

A

group of prospective engineers from Merewether High School have had a closer look at what it’s going to take to become

an electrical engineer after visiting Ampcontrol’s Tomago site. About 30 students visited Ampcontrol,

where they were given an introduction to engineering, met current graduate engineers and toured workshops and engineering offi ces. T e 2013 federal budget has included

$54 million to help address the issue of emerging skill shortages in sectors such as engineering by improving engagement of primary and secondary students in maths and science education. Chief executive offi cer Geoff Lilliss

said the budget announcement was an important step forward for the engineering sector. “We have recognised the same need for a number of years and have fostered an ongoing commitment and investment in education across the business,” he said. “T e future of

engineering relies on young students being engaged in the profession from secondary school. “Competition

for graduating engineers is at an all-time high. Secondary schools

are now off ering engineering programs credited to university degrees to boost enrolment into the engineering disciplines. “T e statistics show there just aren’t

enough engineering graduates to fi ll the jobs. “Demand for engineers is high and

the future of Australian technology and innovation depends on encouraging students into the fi eld. “Our partnerships with Merewether

High School and West Wallsend High are part of our commitment to developing long-term relationships which may lead these students to scholarships and future employment with Ampcontrol.” Ampcontrol also supports industry

scholarships with the University of Newcastle, the Port Stephens mayoral scholarship and runs an in-house graduate, trainee and apprentice program.
