Metro and Bluesfest, Oscar Jimenez is straight into his own intimate set of shows to launch the fi rst single Isabela from his upcoming solo release Distancia. Since founding ARIA- nominated Watussi seven years ago, he has been best known as the band’s charismatic and explosive leader, dominating with a stage presence that has labeled him “the love child of Lenny

F

Kravitz and Ozomatli”. He has led the band on tours to

New Zealand, Japan, Asia and South America, proving himself a visionary on the Latin-roots scene since arriving to Australia about 10 years ago. With this new project, Jimenez has

given full voice to his solo aspirations and, as the fi rst single Isabela demonstrates, he is now revealed a songwriter of soulful intensity, heartfelt depth and intimate exploration.

Jimenez was born

and raised in Colombia, and the new collection of self-penned originals is inspired by his family memories and traditions, and deep South American rhythmic roots. However, the songs

are not weighed down by nostalgia but are, rather, fi nely crafted and uplifting, drawing from cross-cultural genres that have infl uenced him on his musical journey.

Think Carlos Vives, Gilberto Gil,

Manu Chao and Café Tacuba. Next month’s shows expand on his

recent solo performances where he supported Spanish superstar Manu Chao, and the warm-up slot for one of Latin music history’s biggest stars, Juan Luis Guerra, in Sydney. He will be joined on stage by

the talents of Giorgio Rojas, Adam Ventoura, Vincent Sebastian, Daniel Pliner and Steve Marin. He will be playing at Lizotte’s

Newcastle on Thursday, May 24, with Damian Wright as support.

BACK TO THE SWINGIN’ SIXTIES

T

he Fake Four Showband is a 1960s showband that will capture the

sights and sounds of that era, playing rock and roll music covering the greatest decade of music. When they take the

stage, they recreate the atmosphere of the best bands that made rock and roll history. You will be rocking to

the early songs of the forefathers of rock ’n’ roll, with Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Chuck Berry to the swinging sounds of the ’60s with the Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers and the Kinks and then screaming along with the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. Catch the surf and sun in California

with the cool sounds of the Beach Boys. Take a trip to the Whiskey A Go- Go watching the Doors, go Down on the Corner and see a Bad Moon Rising

with Credence Clearwater Revival, do the Wild Thing with the Troggs. You never know who will turn up. This show is not to be missed by all

Beatles and 1960s rock ’n’ roll music fans, with full costumes and wigs to recreate the look of the swinging sixties. They will be appearing at the Kotara Bowling and Recreation Club on Saturday, May 26.
