BIDDIES ON THE ROAD TO DISCOVERY
J
ames Morrison is bringing Motown to Wests New Lambton. The large-scale show, developed this year and featuring classic Motown music,
features four vocalists, as part of an 11-piece band, including a horn section led by virtuoso trumpeter Morrison. Morrison and his band will deliver an evening
concert on Wednesday, June 13. Morrison remembers Motown as the music of
his youth – even as a jazz fan, he recalls being surrounded by the music of Stevie Wonder. He said he had always included a Motown
number or two in his jazz shows, which he and the crowd enjoyed enough to encourage the development of a full Motown show. “The response to Motown music was
instantaneous, like fl icking a switch,” he said. “Everyone instantly starts singing and dancing
and clapping their hands. “The songs’ appeal was due to the depth
of their lyrics and melody, which gave them longevity beyond that of the average disposable

top 40 hit. “All the best Motown songs told a story and
featured a memorable melody, and, on top of that, you’ve got a really funky groove.” The band works to emulate the original
Motown sound, exploring it further by extending the songs with solos and further jamming by Morrison’s experienced band. During the show, Morrison also discusses the
origins of Motown, and the stories behind many well-known Motown tracks.

frank, their rivalries intense and their jokes outrageous. They discover a common
frustration with the limitations of being female and mature in a world still largely defi ned by men. Released from their own
constraints, these fi ve ordinarily marvellous women rediscover their capacity to love, forgive and – take control. Men see their wives, adult children see their mothers, grandchildren see nana and the mature Australian woman sees herself. Don Reid’s play Codgers was a touring favourite in

the ladies. You’ll laugh till you cry. Move over Codgers, the Biddies are in town. Vulnerable, feisty and in
full bloom, these gals are everything – except old. With a cast made up of
some of Australia’s most loved actresses, Maggie Blinco, Annie Byron, Vivienne Garrett, Julie Hudspeth, Donna Lee and Linden Wilkinson, this is a must-see show. “I haven’t had this much
fun since I worked with Paul Hogan on the Crocodile Dundee movies,” Maggie Blinco said. “I am really excited to be
touring Australia with this beautiful cast and wonderful new play.” It will be performed
Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, July 4.
