The Ferret takes top honours Tiger not so toothless after controversial victory
STEPHEN BISSET A
Toronto man is ecstatic after his Sydney-based sailing team took out top
honours in the prestigious Platu Coronation Cup in Pattaya, T ailand. Peter Winter, as part of
the Easy Tiger racing team, took out the event in their Platu-class keelboat called T e Ferret – but not without a degree of controversy. T e event was part of the
Top of the Gulf Regatta – the largest of its kind in Asia. T e team, representing the
Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, eventually won the event on a countback after organisers were forced to abandon the fi nal day’s racing due to a lack of wind. T e team, despite being penalised in the fi rst race and eventually fi nishing second, was awarded an extra six points due to race
committee errors. Two races in, and they were
tied with the Rolf Heemskerk- helmed Nataya, setting up a thrilling fi nal round that, unfortunately, was not to be. While Winter said he was
over the moon with the win, he added it was a little bittersweet as Mother Nature intervened in the fi nal showdown with Nataya. “It’s just fantastic to win – we
were up against some pretty stiff competition, especially from Rolf.” he said. “T e course was very tough
and there was some very tight racing from teams from Singapore, T ailand, Japan and Australia. “While it would have been
great to have had the chance on the fi nal day, we’re all still ecstatic with the win. “Although, it must’ve
been heartbreaking for Rolf because he’s entered the event something like seven times, I think, and he hasn’t won it yet.”
