It can be the worst of winters and the course at Churston remains in excellent condition; it drains very well and you won’t be leaving the 18th with mud caked to your shoes and trouser bottoms. C CHURSTON GOLF

GOLF AT THE HEART OF TORBAY

The BRS tee booking system was introduced in October 2008 and although it had its critics, the Club remains certain that this was the way forward. It really has been a revolution and probably the biggest operational change the club has seen in its long and illustrious history.

This is an excellent opportunity which will enable novices and beginners to learn the fundamentals of the game in a structured period of time. The progression to the next level of membership will be encouraged and incentives will be given. It is anticipated that 6 to 8 of these courses could be run throughout the year, mainly in the evenings although daytime courses will be available. These would give participants the opportunity to start at any time and even participate in the courses twice. The fi rst course, for novices, will last 6 weeks and will include all the fundamentals of golf and how to get started. The second set of 6 weeks for beginners will include short and long game lessons, plus an insight into putting. Both 6 week courses include playing lessons on the course. Each participant will receive a certifi cate of profi ciency after each 6 week course.

don’t think we should underestimate, even for a profi cient golfer, that joining a golf club can be a very harrowing experience and the on line tee booking system is ideal for new members. A new member books his time, he knows the names of his playing partners and he can introduce himself to them with an air of confi dence rather than an apologetic plea for a game of golf!

Understanding this barrier Churston has set up Academy Memberships which allows potential golfers, male and female, to learn the fundamentals in a group environment. These include the Stance, Grip, Backswing, Downswing, Long Game, Short Game and Putting.

Societies which previously went to other Clubs with buggies are now able to have their golf day at Churston because society members who need a buggy can be accommodated.

Churston has a vibrant social side with events organised to attract a wide spectrum of support.
