fine detail is called for I sometimes use a pencil, I find this can heighten the sense of freedom and spontaneity. What influences you? I am always on the lookout for ‘vernacular art’ – i.e. art not done by artists. However there are also many artists whose work I return to again and again – Alfred Wallis, Kenneth Armitage, Alan Lowndes, L.S. Lowry, Fred Yates, Gary Bunt and Anna Macmiadhachain. I am also influenced by words – quotes, poems or song lyrics that often form the starting point for an idea. Have you always been an artist? Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to bring my ideas to life. However, I hadn’t always followed a career in the visual arts. In my early thirties I embarked upon a side project through my love of songwriting. I was lucky enough to get a break with a small German record label that in turn was published through EMI. I recorded and released 3 albums with the label and formed a band that played gigs in London and did a small tour of the south coast of Spain. Flirting with the music business and getting your songs played on the radio was a great experience but I never gave up the day job! How do you

spend your spare time? I like to relax by recording and mixing music – I’m teaching myself how to be a sound engineer, mixing music is a bit like mixing paint. I live next to the sea and enjoy walks on the beach with my family - I have two young daughters and two Parson Russell terriers. I also enjoy the odd spot of sea kayaking, diving, ice climbing and fishing.
