DART HARBOUR YOUNG CHAMPION AWARDS 2012 LOOKING FOR ENTRIES Dart Harbour is looking for a new class of Young Champions of the Dart to reward this year. The Harbour authority is holding the
Young Champion Awards for a third year, and is hoping for a bumper crop of entries in the three age categories: Upper Primary, Secondary and Post 16. The closing date for entries is May 31. Dart Harbour arranged free trips down
the river for schools in October last year to give them ideas for projects for the award, thanks to the generosity of Greenway Ferries and the Dartmouth Steam Railway and Riverboat Company, who donated their boats for free. The judges are hoping all the schools
that took part in the trips are putting together entries, and are looking for more schools and individuals to enter. There are exciting prizes in each age
group and judges are confident of a bumper crop of top-quality applications. The Upper Primary age group is
designed for classes or clubs to enter, under the guidance of a teacher or adult. The Secondary age group is for individuals under the guidance of a teacher or adult, and the Post 16 age group is for individuals only. Projects can look at any aspect of the
river and take in any subject – in the past entries have been related to the history of the river, its environment, industries based on the river and have used art, song, dance and engineering in their work. To enter visit the Dart Harbour website –
www.dartharbour.org - and click on the ‘Young Champions’ link on the left hand side.
BLOOD PRESSURE CHECK DAY HUGE SUCCESS – CAME JUST IN TIME FOR SEVERAL VISITORS
ON?
A special blood pressure check day run by Dartmouth Rotary with Dartmouth Caring saw 158 people come through the doors – and two were sent for urgent checks in hospital. Two others were advised to urgently see their GP within a week, and one was advised to make an appointment within two weeks. 34 of those having their blood pressure taken were advised to see their GP soon to discuss ways of reducing their blood pressure. The event was run under guidelines outlined by the Stroke Association and took place in the Community Café in the Old Market on Saturday April 14. Dartmouth Medical Practice also supported the day by providing the blood pressure machines used to check the 158 attendees.
The first attendees at the café were
Dartmouth mayor Paul Allen and Town Sergeant Ron Lambden. Co-organiser Mike Bennett of
Dartmouth Rotary said he was delighted by the numbers taking part and also that the day had made a real difference to some people’s lives.
DARTMOUTH ACADEMY STUDENT GEORGIA CELEBRATES HONOUR OF BEING OLYMPIC TORCH BEARER
Dartmouth Academy student Georgia Lock is celebrating being chosen as an Olympic Torch bearer. Georgia, 13, will bear the torch when it makes its way through Dartmouth on Sunday May 20 on its route around Britain ahead of the Games Opening Ceremony on July 27.
Her father, James, nominated Georgia for the honour, in recognition of her work helping her older sister who has problems with anxiety attacks and depression. The Year Eight student said she was delighted to get the chance to be part of Olympic history.
Representing peace, unity and friendship, the flame will start its 70-day journey around the UK towards the Olympic stadium on May 18. The flame will be carried the distance by 8,000 inspirational torchbearers. Georgia’s mum, Sarah, who works at the Academy, said she was very proud of her daughter’s selection. “She deserves to have this chance to
be connected with something so positive and wonderful,” she said. “We are all really pleased and excited for her. It’s brilliant she’s been chosen. Georgia’s sister was diagnosed as having severe depression and anxiety, and Georgia was a young carer for her sister. “ “I still don’t know how I feel about it, it hasn’t really sunk in,” said Georgia. “I’m so excited and just looking forward to the day. I’m hoping it is going to be a lot of fun and a great memory to take away from Olympic year.”
