to be playing. They are the quite wonderful These Reigning Days. Their rise has been quite meteoric, apparently (I can’t argue with the PR on their website), and they are destined for humongous things. So a chance for you to be able to say, when they are the biggest band on the planet, I saw ‘em before they were even mildly famous. Great tunes and a voice like Dan’s happen all too infrequently. Good mix. What else? How about some jazz? The sublime Louise Parker is returning to Dartmouth, having recorded a live album here, back in November 2011 at The Flavel. It’s called ‘Skittling for a Live Pig’ – no, I don’t know either – and I get the feeling that she’ll be playing a few tunes from that one. Smokey vocals and a mix of styles; so if jazz is your thing, you won’t want to miss this gig.

Main Stage, 5.30 to 7.30 on 13th May – my research has finally paid off! The incredible Grainne Duffy will be wowing you at that time, on that day. I got that timing info from her tour page, and boy is she touring! Off to Norway after playing here, then on to her native Ireland. She plays a real amalgamation of styles: a little blues, a smidge of country, a drip of soul, all squidged together for a real package of excellence. She reminded me of a guitar-wielding Joss Stone, but mellower. Not to say that Ms. Duffy doesn’t rock- out; she’s got one hell of a band behind her! And her version of the Etta James classic ‘Rather Go Blind’ just has to be heard. You know where; you know when, do not miss it. As ever, our classical music seamstress Marilyn Bird, has stitched together a glorious patchwork of international music and musicians to entertain those of us with a more classical bent. The highlight for me, I think, will be the New Devon Opera who are bringing their production Three Sides of Seduction: Opera’s Eternal Women to the Festival. It’s a sort of operatic mash-up, to use modern parlance, with members of the NDO Chorus and four soloists whose pedigrees are undeniable. Although I do hear tell that Red Priest are also something not be missed!

So there you have it: May in

a nutshell and my choices for the best of the usual eclectic bunch that the Festival organisers have brought together for your delight. Catch ‘em all at venues all over town but you’ll need to grab a programme to plan effectively. Enjoy Just a few little tit-bits for June that really need to be mentioned, particularly on 6th June at The Flavel. Live, living, breathing theatre and it’s from Cornwall.
