Christine Johnson, Pitchcare’s Training Coordinator, has been with the company for over five years. During this time she has developed a range of specialist courses which have been approved by Lantra, making them the only such courses in the industry to be independently accredited by a National Awarding Body.


She has also worked with industry trainers to prepare and deliver industry-specific Management Training for Head Groundsmen/Greenkeepers and their Deputies, and courses on Dealing With Difficult People and Situations.


Christine also works with a number of major commercial institutions to provide ongoing training on a range of land-based machinery and equipment, including bespoke courses to bring employees up to date on Health and Safety practices. Clients include BP International, Monteray (the facilities arm of British Telecom), York Racecourse, Bromsgrove School and the States of Guernsey.


The current range of courses includes:


General Sports Turf Maintenance (Lantra Certified)


Accredited by Lantra, these 1-day courses on pitch preparation,


maintenance and renovation led by our own team of experts cover the Winter Sports, Cricket, Bowls and Artificial Sports Surfaces. The courses are ideal for volunteer or part-time groundsman or those entering the profession. Theory based, each course gives an overview of the safe use of the machinery and equipment used to create a professional playing surface.


Basic Tree Survey and Inspection (Lantra Certified)


This one-day course aims to provide specific tree survey and inspection training at a basic level for contractors, highway engineers, tree wardens, grounds maintenance staff,


Land Based Courses


We work closely with a network of training partners throughout the UK to offer a full range of land-based training to individual candidates, leading to Lantra Awards and/or NPTC Assessments and Certification.


Topics include Safe Use of Pesticides (PA1, PA2, PA6 etc), Arboriculture (chainsaws e.g. CS30/31, brushcutters, hedgecutters), Land-based Machinery and Equipment (mowers, tractors, ATVs etc). Regular Pesticide Application courses are held at our premises in Telford.

Essential Management Skills (Lantra Certified)


Especially developed for groundstaff team leaders and supervisors, this 2-


day course for Head Groundsmen and Greenkeepers and their Deputies which takes place in late Autumn/Winter, is delivered by trainer and careers counsellor Frank Newberry. Three months separate the two days so delegates have the opportunity to implement new techniques and then bring their experiences back to the group.


Dealing with Difficult People and Situations (Lantra Certified)


This one day course is of value to anyone whose working environment


brings them into contact with the general public, e.g. public parks and gardens, village or community sports facilities and play areas, school sports fields, local authority amenity land, theme and leisure parks. Inevitably such people will meet situations of potential

Lawn Care for the 21st Century


A 1-day course designed by Phil Sharples, author of “The Lawn Book”.


This course is designed for anyone looking to produce a quality lawn. The basic course is ideal for the keen amateur gardener. We also offer a more advanced course for Lawn Care Professionals which includes sections


on turf culture and soil science. Organic practices are also considered.


Health and Safety - All Turf Machinery


This course has been delivered to groups of groundstaff from schools, local authorities and sporting establishments such as racecourses. A typical delegate group would include those who already have their practical machinery and equipment qualifications but whose employers require them to take refresher training with an emphasis on Health and Safety, perhaps for insurance purposes. We tailor courses to suit the requirements of the client, and courses can be one or more days dependent on the range of machinery to be covered.


Emergency First Aid A one-day course for groups of up to twelve candidates.
