An introduction to the work of Philadelphia-based practice BEAM.
VALLEY GREEN BANK,
PHILADELPHIA, PA ARCHITECT: METCALFE ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN This sophisticated banking space is illumi- nated in dynamic fashion to visually expand its conservative size. Indirect light sources provide shadow free illumination. Detailed closely with the architect, the light filled coffers also visually create a more expan- sive space. The continuous linear cove allows light to graze the decorative wall behind the teller stations. To ensure teller accuracy, the low-glare lighting provides the optimal level of illumination, both to compete with the heavily daylighted interior from its south- western exposure. Overall, the luminance at the teller stations is 55-60fc, and 35-45fc measured throughout the central banking space, at 27% below allowed LPD.
HISTORIC CHRIST CHURCH, PHILADELPHIA, PA CLIENT: CHRIST CHURCH PRESERVATION TRUST ARCHITECT: FRENS + FRENS Christ Church is a 250 year-old national treasure and is referred to as the Nation’s Church because the Revolutionary leaders wor- shipped here. Still today it has an active congregation, which com- missioned BEAM to successfully illuminate both its sanctuary and steeple over two phases. The interior was lighted with limited inter- vention, while the cupola glows from warm-toned sodium lamps. Through its history the interior lighting was always lacking. Electric sources were inefficient and carelessly strewn throughout. Candle sources were poorly located and both difficult and dangerous to use efficiently. Due to this neglect, a modern lighting scheme was desperately needed. However, after a series of design charettes, the congregation’s property stewards requested the most minimal approach possible be taken. Ultimately, the design intent was to only restore, modernise, and improve, rather than re-create. Thus, a candelabra chandelier (once a gift to congregant Ben Frank- lin), which has hung in place since the 1770’s, received a sophisti- cated, commercial winch-lift, suited to its 600-pound weight; now real wax-candles are used daily. Colonial revival chandeliers dating to the 1940’s, beloved by the congregation, were refurbished. Also, a custom electrified reproduction of a 266-year old wall candelabra was created for illuminating the upper balcony. Meanwhile, the primary aspect of the design improvements called for two 5-foot diameter convection vents in the 70-foot high ceiling to be retrofitted with a custom fixture. These top access fixtures have multiple lamp sources and multiple circuits, allowing the main seating area, the altar and the organ loft to be sufficiently illumi- nated with minimal glare. Controlled with a timeclock dimming system, the church interior now glows monumentally for visitors and congregants to enjoy throughout the day and into the night.
