140 TECHNOLOGY / THE ARC SHOW PREVIEW
PROFILE MICHAEL BOSANKO
Renowned light artist Michael Bosanko will be at The ARC Show to discuss his process of creating and capturing ephemeral 3D graffiti.
While the principles behind light graf- fiti may be easy to grasp, in the hands of experts like Wales-based artist Michael Bosanko the results rarely fail to impress. Since discovering the technique in 2004, Bosanko has become a leading proponent of this ephemeral art form achieving interna- tional recognition and commercial acclaim with a client list that includes TalkTalk, Peu- geot, British Airways and CMIB in Malaysia. The process itself will be familiar to anyone that has ever used a sparkler to scrawl their name through the air. Long exposure photography is used to capture the trails created as torches and other light sources are moved across the frame. In essence the camera compresses time to form a single image, allowing the artist to build three- dimensional sketches within real world settings.
For Bosanko, the appeal comes from the transient, yet completely transformative nature of the pieces. “Filling an envi- ronment with three-dimensional ‘brush
strokes’, vibrancy, energy... turning the ordinary into the extra-ordinary... these are some of the things that drive me; fuels my passion,” he explains. “I also find enormous reward in creating a piece of work that only exists in that moment; the only evidence of its existence is what is recorded on camera. The environment; my canvas, is all that’s left behind, exactly as it was before my arrival.”
Bosanko will be rounding off day one of the IALD conference at this year’s ARC Show with a discussion on his work as well as curating a show of light graffiti works created by students at the UCL Bartlett and Rose Bruford college. Working in small teams, these emerging designers will create a series of temporary light artworks based around the theme of theatre and spectacle. Michael Bosanko will be explaining his work in his talk ‘Inspiration and light’ at 20.45 on Wednesday 29th February as part of the IALD Enlighten Europe conference.
