Sessions begin Friday afternoon with a topic that has received a lot of attention recently-–the unwanted horse. Ericka Caslin from the Un- wanted Horse Coalition will discuss issues and solutions relating to this nationwide concern. Considering boarding horses at your place? Get great tips on running a successful boarding operation from Karen and Stephen Fulton of Full Moon Farm. Pasture care actually starts in the winter! Learn how to manage weeds


in your pastures with the University of Maryland’s Dr. Scott Glenn. Hay prices are high, but are you getting what you pay for? Learn how to recognize true hay quality with forage specialist Dr. Les Vough. Para- sites are another constant issue for horse owners. UMD Specialist Susan Schoenian will share information about using fecal egg counts to im- prove worm control. T e internet is a wonderful resource for horse-related information, but how do you know what is trustworthy and reliable? UMD Equine Special- ist Kristen Wilson will show how to search the web with confi dence!


Equine Medical Center Vets Share Helpful Horse Health Hints Saturday will again be jampacked with information, featuring talks by


veterinarians from the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Rebecca Splan will share her knowledge about the genetics involved in breeding your next champion. Dr. Martin Furr will explain management of Equine Metabolic Syndrome and how to reduce the risks of infec- tious diseases through improved equine biosecurity. Foot lameness is something all horse owners hate to struggle through. Dr. Nat White will discuss how to make that diagnosis and what treatments are available to horse owners. Our equine athletes put a lot of stress on their joints.

Dr. Amy Burk, University of Maryland Equine Specialist, will share the top ten feeding mistakes horse owners make so you can be sure to avoid them in the coming year. Amber Mof- fett, equine nutritionist, will share suggestions for feeding on a budget as well as the special nutritional needs of the mare and foal. Staying motivated as a rider can be tough. Jen Moshier will share some


great tips on keeping going when the going gets tough! As a registered judge she also is the perfect person to explain what a judge really looks for in the show ring.


Knowing how horses learn can really help us as we develop train- ing methods. Dr. Carissa Wickens from the University of Delaware will teach about equine learning and training psychology so you can get the most out of each training moment. All horse owners and professionals have heard that they should get


everything in writing, but what does that really mean? Kathleen J.P. Ta- bor, Esq. will help us understand the legal liabilities and responsibilities associated with horses.
