Racing’s Golden Opportunity by Leslie Diamond I’d like to express my support of our racing community and my confi dence in the future of racing in Maryland. Some may think of Maryland racing as a community in crisis. Nothing could be farther from the

truth. I believe we stand at the doorway to a tremendous, even historic opportunity. Nestled between Churchill Downs and Belmont Park, we live at the confl uence of many long- standing racing communities struggling for answers in a fi eld plagued by questions and doubts. I believe that millions of racing participants, whether owners, trainers, jockeys, horses or fans, have been asking for improvement for decades, sometimes publicly, but always in the privacy of their own hearts. T e relatively sustained success of circuits in New York, Florida and California ensures those states’ dependence on the status quo. Only Maryland has the freedom to re-envision racing and rebuild it from the ground up. I believe that one day magazines will write articles about us entitled, “Maryland: T e Little State

T at Could.” I believe one hundred years from now, people will say, “It was completely diff erent, before Mary- land took it apart and put it back together again.” I believe we are on the brink of something fantastic and glorious, a rebirth that will leave other racing communities breathless, in awe of our ingenuity and vision. We have the advantage. We have what no one else has. We have the freedom to reinvent. What do you believe? What do you know? I know that Maryland has the brightest, most talented and experienced racing community in the nation. I know our people have tremendous passion, desire and commitment, to have stood so tenaciously in the face of adversity. I know that we are not dependent on anyone from Pennsylvania or Canada to solve our problems or to give us permission to determine our own destiny. I know we have the right and confi dence to choose our future, and we have the heart and shared wisdom to come together. T is I know. I believe that all our questions have been answered. I believe we need only look in the eyes of our neighbors and those of our horses, and the solutions will be revealed to us. I believe we are in the midst of the most exhilarating, historic success the racing community will ever experience; we are in the midst of evolution. I believe we have a dream, and that dream is calling, calling, calling us, relentlessly and irrevocably. I believe its momentum is irresistible, whether we surrender to it now or rail against the whispers we hear, feel and know in our hearts. Maryland is the birthplace of T oroughbred racing and it is here that the entire sport will be

reborn. We have always been the Great Confl uence, the place where North meets South, where mighty rivers fi nd release in the great Bay, where horses and people forge their path to the Triple Crown. Our greatest glory is not behind us; it lies with us, and ahead of us—today, tomorrow, and the day after. T is I believe. T is I know. We are the Free State. Let’s saddle up and break some new ground!
