Exploring Nature’s Role in Children’s Health
I
n these days of organized play
dates, sterilized rooms, video games and controlled activity, Green Meadow Waldorf School is highlighting nature’s powerful role in the health
and development of children. On Saturday, January 21 at 1 p.m., Green Meadow Waldorf School will screen Mother Nature’s Child, followed by a discussion. The documentary addresses the extinction of recess and outside play due to an increased focus on test preparation in the classroom as early as kindergarten. Experts in this documentary expose the effects of “nature deficit disorder” on children’s health, development and attitude, from preschool to high school. “In a time when some children spend over 40 hours a
week in front of a screen and less than 40 minutes a day outside, we want to highlight the many benefits of being outdoors,” said Vicki Larson, Director of Communications and Marketing at Green Meadow Waldorf School. “At Green Meadow, our philosophy includes allowing ample time for children to be outside and explore the natural world, which develops intellectual and social capacities and builds physi- cal, emotional and mental resilience.”
Location: Green Meadow Waldorf School, 307 Hungry Hol- low Rd, Chestnut Ridge. Suggested donation: adults $10, students and seniors $5. No one will be turned away. On-site childcare is available by request. For more information, con- tact Vicki Larson at 356-2514 x 311 or
