4 Rockland & Orange Counties SUBSCRIPTIONS

Do you remember playing on a see-saw as a child? Did you ever try to balance yourself perfectly so that you and your friend were both parallel to the ground with neither one of you at the bottom or the top? If you were able to get there, it probably did not last long but it definitely was great achieving that one moment. Achieving balance on a daily basis often can be a challenge. Certainly, some areas to consider are eating well and exercising. Other areas can involve inner

practices such as meditation and visual imagery (see pages 30 and 31). In this month’s feature article, Kathleen Barnes explains various

complementary healthcare options and how they can be balanced with conventional therapies (see page 18). Terri Evans advocates how we, as patients, should be an integral part of our care, balancing our practitioner’s expertise with our own knowing (see page 24). Now that the cold weather is here, my daughter frequently has been asking

for soup with dinner. It certainly makes sense to eat warming foods to balance out the cold weather. There are some great soup recipes to try out with your kids in this month’s Healthy Kids that balance the yummy with the healthy (see page 26). While January often is a time when people commit to making major changes

in their lives, it often is the smaller modifications that have the lasting effects. Once these become habits or the norm, you may be inspired to make larger changes. One small change can be incorporating one new food into your diet. In Conscious Eating, there are seven power foods with which you can begin (see page 36). Some of these even can be added to foods that you already eat. Another change could be doing one yoga pose a day. Local yoga instructor Jody Atkinson provides a great yoga exercise that you can do every morning before you even get out of bed (see page 38). In fact, it is one of the poses that I do every morning. While I start my day with only a few poses, for me it is something manageable that I know I can do every day. If I said I was going to do an hour of yoga each day, I may never get around to doing any yoga. I’ve found what works for me and keeps me consistent. Who knows? Perhaps one day I’ll extend my practice but I am content with this for now. Similarly, there are small changes for your home such as fixing leaks and

adding insulation that can make a notable difference. Once that smaller step is in place, your home may be ready for a bigger step, such as using radiant heat or an air-source heat pump (see page 34). Another opportunity is to do a ‘mailbox makeover’ by taking a few small steps to reduce the amount of mail you receive, thereby helping the environment and reducing clutter (see page 37). May this year be filled with numerous small steps and much balance.

With Joy,
