f you want to start your mornings gently and slowly, you may

want to begin with some yoga before you even get out of bed. This is espe- cially good on mornings when the body is feeling achy. Reawakening the muscles and joints with some simple asanas (postures) while still under the covers may be just what is needed.

• Begin with lying on your back, moving the extremities such as the fin- gers and toes and letting your head rock from side to side. • Then draw your right knee in close to your chest, take hold of it with the left hand and draw the knee over to the left. This can be done slowly and quietly so you do not disturb whoever may be sleeping next to you. • Extend your right arm to the right, bending it at the elbow or fully ex- tending it if you’ve got the space and turn your head to look over your right shoulder. This creates a nice twist for the entire length of your spine. • Breathe into this, focusing your attention on the rise of the inhale and, even more slowly, the descent of the exhale so that you have the sensation of breathing up and down your spine. • Notice where you feel tightness and send a nice, deep, expansive inhale there. On the exhale, let go of any tens- ing, allowing your muscles and bones to melt perhaps a little deeper into the pose. • Let go of any thoughts your mind is grasping onto and redirect the mind to focus on the breath and subtle sensa- tions in your body.

• After several breaths, repeat on the other side.

Take the time to connect with your body and breath daily. By doing this for just a few minutes each morning, you will feel better and it likely will become second nature. By beginning your day with such kindness and respect toward yourself, you are setting the tone for how you will treat others throughout the day, and that is a beautiful yoga practice.
