KING OF THE WORLD The British are enjoying success again in this year’s film awards
season with The King’s Speech leading the way. The film about King George VI’s attempt to overcome his stutter has been well received worldwide, perhaps riding on the revival of interest in the British royal family generated by this year’s weddings. Colin Firth (still much-loved for his portrayal as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice) plays HM The Queen’s father who became king unexpectedly following the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII, in 1936. He scooped the Golden Globe award for best actor and, at the time of going to press, we are hopeful for the film’s success in the BAFTAs and Oscars.

Restoration STOWE GETS GILDING
This Easter onwards, be sure to visit Stowe House, the magnificent Grade I listed Neoclassical palace set in 400 acres of landscaped park in Buckinghamshire. The ongoing and rather ambitious restoration of the house’s 400 rooms sees the Large Library, one of the most magnificent Georgian interiors in Britain, now open to the public. It started life as a ballroom in the 1740s and was furnished, gilded and stocked as a library during the 1790s in anticipation of a visit from George III, who never came.

The Ayrshire ploughman, who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the world’s best loved poets, is being celebrated in a new museum in his birthplace, Alloway. National Trust for Scotland’s new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum replaces the former Burns National Heritage Park, bringing together all of the Alloway sites with a connection to the poet, including the Burns Cottage where he was born in 1759, the Burns Monument, Alloway Auld Kirk, and Auld Brig O’Doon – plus a new modern museum home to the world’s most important collection of his life and works. HEREFORDSHIRE’S CORE EVENT
This year is the 200th anniversary of the publication of horticulturist Thomas Andrew Knight’s ground- breaking Pomona Herefordiensis. Herefordshire, the county where he was born and famous for its apple blossom, is celebrating with a Year of The Orchard, with a calendar of special events. Knight went on to develop many of the fruit and vegetable varieties that we still eat today.
