the BRIT LIST WHAT TO BUY

On 27 April The Wizard of Oz arrives at the world-famous London Palladium, where Judy Garland, the original Dorothy, performed live with her daughter Liza Minnelli in 1964. This classic family musical tells the story of Kansas girl Dorothy Gale who finds herself whirled off to the Land of Oz by a tornado. As she travels along the Yellow Brick Road to find the Wizard of Oz and get back home she joins forces with the Tin Man and the cowardly Lion, while trying at all costs to avoid the Wicked Witch of the West, who wants her magical ruby slippers. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new production stars Danielle Hope (above), who won the BBC’s Over the Rainbow show, and contains all the much-loved original songs from the Oscar-winning movie score, and all your favourite characters, plus a few surprises. 8 Tour the tulips at Pashley Manor

On the Sussex-Kent border is an English country garden which, from 27 April to 8 May, will be celebrating tulips. The festival began 17 years ago to mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the tulip from Persia, and its 22,000 blooms are “a visual feast of colours,” as owner James Sellick says. “Hot reds and yellows carpet the herbaceous borders; pinks and whites gracefully line the rose walk; blues and purples refl ect the calm water in the beds by the swimming pool. It’s a superb show.” Tel: (01580) 200888; www.pashleymanorgardens.com. – Leigh Clapp
