WHAT TO DO 

rolling contest in Cambridgeshire May Day has always prompted madcap celebrations, and the annual cheese-rolling contest in Stilton on May 2 is no exception. Competitors are grouped into teams of four, and race down the main street of the village in fancy dress, rolling a wooden block shaped like a large cheese. This is in fact quite civilised compared with the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling Festival in Gloucester, where competitors hurl themselves down a hill in pursuit of a cheese. www.stilton.org; www.cheeserolling.org.uk.
