2011 – Stepping Into Another Great Year of Racing

-a certain 2-year that caught every- one’s attention – on both sides of the border.

We look forward to 2011 picking up where we ended in the fall. Ontario’s Quarter Horse Racing community was well represented at the Fall Heritage Place Sale in Oklahoma. 19 Ontario delegates made successful bids on more than 35 entries at this premiere sale. While some are engaged to race south of the border, many are either on their way or have already taken up residence in Ontario.

This infusion of talent will help build an already strong Ontario Quarter Horse Racing industry.

ONE KOOL WAVE – 2010 QROOI Horse of the Year, was recog- nized as AQHA Canadian Champion recently. This caps off a stellar year for this wonderful competitor. Con- gratulations to the One Kool Wave Bailey-Ito-Reid-Ito connection on this latest accomplishment.

ly. Ontario Quarter Horse Racing will see the return of its’ Stakes Program much the same as it ran in 2010. One additional Stakes Race has been added at Ajax Downs for 2011. It looks as though the coming race season will be another record year for Quarter Horse racing in Ontario.

At the time of printing, the 2011 Stakes Race Program had yet to be approved by the ORC however history shows this will be forth coming short-

2011 Ontario quarter horse racing season is approaching quickly

By Kim Ito

January is a difficult time of year to get excited about racing. Blustery winds and snow drifts make even the simplest jobs unbearable, as we trudge around with frozen toes and sunken spirits. However, the 2011 Ontario quarter horse racing season is approaching quickly and there’s nothing like new stake opportunities and continued Program funding to help warm us through the weather so we can begin preparing for another season. Ajax Downs has applied for 40 race days

program eligible counterparts. There will be continued funding of $250,000 to support purs- es on restricted races and $400,000 to support open allowance races in 2011.

in 2011. The Ajax Downs race calendar for 2011 shows a shortened season compared to 2010, starting on May 15 and ending on Octo- ber 2. However, Tuesday racing begins on May 24 in 2011 (as opposed to June 15 in 2010) and continues until the last Tuesday in September. Having only 2 weeks in the race calendar with only 1 day of racing (the first and the last), should help ease the difficulty of get- ting into races that everyone faced last year when there were 5 weeks at the beginning sea- son and 3 weeks at the end of the season with only 1 day of racing.

There will be more racing opportunities at Fort Erie than in 2010, details of which will be available in the near future. As an added bonus for shippers, stalls will be available for Quarter horse trainers at Fort Erie.

The Racing Program budget was approved in December of 2010. Base purse funding has increased to $10,500 per race from $10,000 per race in 2010. For owners of Ontario Bred and Ontario Sired horses, the Ontario Bred Purse Bonus of $3500 per race and the Ontario Sired Purse Bonus of $1000 per race will continue in 2011, which means that Ontario Bred and Sired horses will continue to compete for $4500 more per race, in open races, than their non

New stake races for 2011 include the $150,000 added Ontario Jackpot Derby and the $100,000 added Ontario Sired Futurity. The Ontario Jackpot Derby will be an open stake for 3 year olds. The Ontario Sired Futurity will be restricted to horses sired by Ontario Accred- ited Sires. Additional funding has also been allocated to the stakes program to ensure that all stake races will have a minimum of $50,000 added. In 2010, the Maple Leaf Futurity was $35,000 added, the Maple Leaf Derby was $35,000 added, the Ajax Downs Classic as $45,000 added and the Ajax Downs Maiden Stake was $30,000 added.

area at Ajax Downs are taking shape, showing Ajax Downs’ commitment to advancing Quarter Horse Racing in Ontario.

The QROOI Yearling and Mixed Sale will return in 2011. Building on the very successful inaugural edition of this event, QROOI is actively looking to advance our sale’s place in the industry.

Fort Erie Track gets green light for 2011

ed Thursday’s meeting, said: “I was very pleased to see how the board of directors and its partners were able to build on its successful season last year to ensure that live racing continues into 2011 and beyond, keeping the jobs associated with the oper- ation of the Fort Erie Race Track and Slots con- tributing to the Fort Erie economy.”

In December, the board decided to move for- ward with live racing in 2011.

“I don’t really know the specifics and I don’t think they want to get into specifics, it’s just that the issues that they had have been

addressed and they feel comfortable their concerns have been addressed.”

The Ontario Quarter Horse Racing Indus- try Development Program will continue many of its good works in 2011. The Program will continue to fund the insurance benefits program available to QROOI members and the Pathway to Employment and Education program will continue in 2011 as well. The two day orienta- tion session for Pathway Students has been planned for March 25-26. The scholarship pro- gram, which has a maximum of $2500 per indi- vidual, has also expanded to, include: Ontario University or College journalism programs, University of Guelph certificate and diploma programs, Equine programs at Kemptville Col- lege, and the Olds College Exercise Rider/Jockey Training Program .

Government of Ontario re-appoints Walker as ORC Commissioner

Toronto, ON – Chair Rod Seiling announced that the Government of Ontario has reappoint- ed Brenda Walker, of Owen Sound, ON as a Commissioner for a three (3) year term, effec- tive February 2, 2011. Mrs. Walker was first named to the Board of the Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) in 2003.

“Brenda has considerable experience in racing and an in-depth understanding of the industry,” said Seiling. “She knows first-hand

the challenges of working in horse racing. Most importantly, she has a notable record of service as a Commissioner, and over the years has served the racing community in many ways. These are great assets to the ORC and I look forward to her continued efforts to share her knowledge of the industry.”

The track will host 78 days of live racing and continue with the provincial quarter-horse pro- gram, said Jim Thibert, chief executive officer of the Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium. “We had some administrative issues come up and, of course, the situation is that they could have been pretty serious impediments to the board,” said Thibert.

He noted all matters have been addressed to the satisfaction of the board after Thursday’s meet- ing. He didn’t want to get into further details.

“As spring approaches, our staff looks for- ward to welcoming back the community of horse people, owners, trainers, their staff and race offi- cials for the May 7, 2011, opening day,” said Thib- ert.

Stakes winner and multiple grade 1 finalist Winners Award will stand the 2011 season at R.A. Hunderup’s Norse Ridge Farm near King City, Ontario, Canada. His fee has been set at $2,500. Owned and bred by Jerry Windham, the son of leading sire and broodmare sire Runaway Win- ner won or placed eight times to 4, earning $80,148. He won the TQHA Sire’s Cup Stakes (R) and was third in the Dash For Cash Derby (G1). Winners Award was also a finalist in the Rui- doso Futurity (G1), Texas Classic Derby (G1), Ruidoso Derby (G1), All American Juvenile Invi- tational (G3), TQHA Classic Stakes (RG3) and West Texas Juvenile invitational.

The consortium planned to complete a new lease agreement with Nordic Gaming, the private company that owns the racetrack property, Thurs- day. The board recently received information from its lawyer indicating its members, who are volun- teers, could be held personally responsible for debts if the racetrack closes. The board members had been reluctant to sign any contractual agree- ments needed to prepare for another season of rac- ing unless they have some protection. The consortium, which formed after its mem- bers struck a unique deal with the town, province and Nordic Gaming last year to keep the track from closing, was hoping the town and/or province could come up with a way to indemnify board members in case the track is forced to wind down operations and there’s not enough money to cover outstanding liabilities.

On Monday night, town council deferred a decision on the board’s request that the municipali- ty indemnify members against personal financial risk. Council met behind closed doors to consider the request. Councillors asked the town’s lawyer to look into the issue and report back to them with a recommendation.
