Notice to the Industry
Piroplasmosis: All horses from Texas and New Mexico
require import permit
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), which reg- ulates all cross border shipment of animals from the U.S, has announced that all horses coming from Texas and New Mexico must be accompanied with an import permit. This move has been prompted by the discovery of some pockets of equine piroplas- mosis infections in these parts of the U.S.
At present there are no restrictions, other than normal health paper requirements, for horses from the rest of the U.S. This may change however depending on the American situation so a call to the CFIA and your destination track would be wise prior to shipping.
This permit will require a recent negative piroplasmosis test certificate. If you plan to bring horses up to Canada from those states, you would be well advised to contact your localCFIA office first for up to date information.

exhibitors are rewarded with a prize. The Summer Circuit offers a full run of classes including the Adult walk/jog/trot Division.
Summerama will be held in Palgrave on July 1-4. This show always offers great competition, circuit awards and high point awards. Summerama show is a good chance to accumulate points towards year end awards. The Adult Walk/jog/trot Division will be held again this year. Not ready to lope or canter? Join us for these classes and experi- ence what Area3 and showing Quarter Horses has for you! On August 12-14 the All Novice show and Summer Circuit will be held in Orangeville. As always the Area3 Promotional Club is looking for new members, sponsors and volunteers. Your involvement in the club makes it possible for us, the Board of Directors, to continue to offer the quality of shows we have been able to in the past. The future looks even brighter with the sup- port of our members! Help us to continue to offer an excep- tional show experience to all those you support the Area3 Promotional club.
The CFIA is continuing to monitor the situation. You can access up to date information regarding the current “import requirements” for horses into Canada through the CFIA AIRS (Automated Import Reference System) at this web site:

Key to the success of the Ontario Racing Program is the health and welfare of racehorses. The Ontario Racing Commis- sion (ORC) advises that it is the responsibility of licensees – and particularly owners of Ontario racehorses – to keep up to date on various federal regulatory matters that impact racing and race- horses. Owners and trainers are encouraged to watch for updates on a regular basis.
