ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
NOMINATIONS
This notice is to advise that at the Annual General Meeting of the ONTARIO TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIA- TION, INC., nominations will be received for positions on the Board of Directors. The Nominating Committee provides this notice for the general membership asking persons who will let their name stand for election on the board to indicate such interest by contacting any Director, the Nominating Committee ( Karin Zawad- owsky & Bonnie Simpson), or by attend- ing the Annual General Meeting where additional nominations will be entertained from the floor. The AGM is scheduled for March 19, 2011 at 1pm at Cam Am in London, Ontario.
The board consists of a maximum of
eighteen (18) directors with a 2 year term. Approximately half the board member terms expire in alternating years to allow for continuity. Therefore, approximately half of the present director terms will expire at this AGM in 2011.
As set out in the By-laws, to be eli- gible for election as a Director, a person must:
• be a member in good standing • have confirmed in writing or verbally his/her willingness to serve as a director • have been a member for at least 28 days. The board meets approximately 11 times annually on the 3rd Thursday of each month.

Looking for a Good Trail Horse? Try a Standardbred!
On a beautiful fall day at a group ride on the fantastic trails of Teen Ranch, just south of Orangeville, I met Shelley Hig- gins, who was riding a lovely Standardbred mare called Paris Crew. Shelley told me that she fosters Standardbred horses along with her busy career as a C.E.F. Level 1 Coach and run- ning a boarding facility with 20+ horses just outside Orangeville.
Shelley’s first horse was a Standardbred which she showed in jumper classes up to 5 feet. The love affair continues with
Shelley now fostering Standard- bred horses as a volunteer with the Ontario Standardbred Adop- tion Society. The volunteers work with horses who are retired from the racing circuit and train them to be ridden under saddle until a forever home can be found for them. Shelley says that Standard- breds are a very versatile, hon- est, forgiving breed that always try their best to please and make excellent pleasure, trail riding horses. They range in size from 15 to 16.2 hands and have usu- ally been exposed to a lot of dif-
ferent experiences through their life on the race track. They are excellent starter horses for those just get- ting into riding because they have such kind, for- giving natures.
In the case of Paris Crew, Shelley had exposed her to a few shows last summer but this was her first trail ride. There were about 25 hors- es on the ride and Paris Crew behaved like she had been doing this every week. As of early January 2011, Paris Crew has been adopted to a permanent home but there are many more nice horses like her available through the OSAS and can be viewed at their website
www.osas.ca . The cost of adopting a Standardbred horse is only $500 but the Society wants to ensure
that the horses do go to good homes. The OSAS does an inspection of the prospective adoptee home along with follow up visits to make sure that the horse is settling well.
Through my trail riding club, Wellington Grand Trail Riders, I recently heard of an urgent case where good homes have to found for 10 Standard- bred mares in the Owen Sound area, due to the illness of their elderly owner. The horses range in age from a yearling to 15 years and have been very well cared for up to now. The contact person for this rescue effort is Evelyne Bernhardt, who can be reached through her website
www.HeartfeltHealing.net. My thanks to Harry de Vries, for kindly sharing his pic- tures of Shelley and her horse, Paris Crew.
