What are you like?

Paul Cawood, Business Development Manager at Languard - a former rugby player who likes the smell of perfume and red wine!

Who are you? Paul Cawood Business Development Manager at Languard Ltd.

Status? Married to Caroline with James, our son, who is two.

Who is your hero and why? Hard to choose between Martin Johnson and Sir Steve Redgrave – they are everything a champion should be. Both have massive strength of character, courage by the skip full, and lead by example.

What is your dream holiday? My big ambition is to sail across the Atlantic, but I’ll settle for great snow in the Alps for some skiing!

What annoys you the most? Politicians and bad manners, especially today’s breed of ‘professional’ politician who hasn’t spent time being anything else. Working in the real world for a while would help cure the arrogance they seem to suffer from. Good manners cost nothing, they make the world much nicer!

Favourite radio station? Radio 4 and 5 Live. A healthy blend of sport and current affairs.

Who wouldn’t you like to be? The England football manager. Why would

anyone do that job? It must be miserable having to put up with both the press and the players.

What’s your favourite record? Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd or Protection by Massive Attack.

If you won the lottery what is the first thing you would do? Call my mum! And pay off the mortgage.

The most memorable event of your life? Sailing through the tail of Hurricane Ivan in 2005 and being here to write about it.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given? Hard work is always rewarded. A bit old fashioned but it’s served me well.

What’s your favourite smell? Tough one! I have three to choose from, Caroline’s favourite fragrance, good red wine or meat on a barbeque.

What’s your favourite sport? Rugby. I played for twenty five years. I had to retire this year and I really miss it!

What three words would you use to describe yourself? Loyal, honest, dependable.

Where is our industry going? Into the unknown. Our ability to control pests, weeds and diseases could be stopped by the EU. We seem to be sleep walking into this without realising how serious this could be. Our ability to manage our man made environments effectively and to a high standard may change forever, and we can’t sit and let it happen!
