these people which cause the problems for those that represent our industry to government and drive the need for raised standards, who have to be brought to account

The Solution The solution to the perceived problems with health and the environment isn’t a ban or severe restriction. The solution is effective training and awareness which, allied to stewardship - better use of the products we have by those that are using them, will achieve so much more than reacting to a problem. Implementing a long term solution, which will address quality of people, quality of training and progressive best practice, will deliver the improvements needed to ensure availability of pesticides as tools to use in the future. The new scheme, Amenity Assured, goes a long way to achieve this.

Let’s just think for a moment about what the consequences of the proposed ban are. One key proposal is ‘no use in public spaces’. This is a wide definition, and could include streets, parks, sports

tees and greens at your golf course. The solutions that enable the simple cost effective removal could well go. In other EU member states the

prohibition of products to control weeds, and diseases in sports turf already exists. In countries such as Switzerland, Denmark and Germany the range and rates of products that enable control of turf pests and diseases is a fraction of that we have in the UK. This lack of effective control options has led to other ways to achieve a solution. This hasn’t meant hand weeding and grin and bear it. It has meant that managers, faced with no other option, have resorted to using agricultural products, making trips across borders to obtain products available in other countries and then applying them at night. So much for restrictions that haven’t been thought out!
