IRRIGATION Royal Birkdale
There is a huge cost involved in making the course that little bit longer
from the standard, everyday tees, the men’s and women’s - that’s where 90 percent of your golfers are playing from. There is a huge cost involved in making the course that little bit longer, too. To add 1,000 yards - say, from 6,500 yards to 7,500 yards - you’ll need 20-30 percent extra land. That could cost millions of
pounds more, making a significant financial impact on the project. And the extra costs don’t stop there - there are increased maintenance costs, not to mention additional water usage.
Some of the best
courses in the world are well under 7,000 yards long. For example, Rye Golf Club, here in the UK is only 6,300 yards and a par 68, but it is one of the toughest and most beautiful courses in the British Isles.
The craze of making extra long courses is now starting to subside and it’s getting a little easier to persuade developers they need shorter courses, especially if they are building a multi-course venue - it is best to have a tournament course and a shorter course to offer a bit of variety. working on two projects in Egypt that follow this logic - one is a resort venue on the Red Sea and the other is a full- blown tournament course near Cairo. Both are owned by the same client, but offer a different proposition. The client has been very smart in doing this and will link the two
venues. Developers need to remember that having a golf course that can be enjoyed by all is likely to be the key to business success. Chasing the

dream of hosting a tournament may be worthy, but if it is at the expense of alienating the most important customer - the average golfer - the extra costs of creating a long, championship course may prove too much of a burden.
