Vandalism to any part of your pitch, golf course or garden can be enough to make a grown man cry, but rather than dwell on the situation, it’s important to get busy. Prompt remedial action can limit the damage and speed up the repair process as one Course Manager found out last year

One morning in late March 2007, Steve Mucklow, Course Manager of Beau Desert Golf Club in Cannock, Staffordshire, was greeted by a sight which would have filled any course manager with despair. Two of his greens had been attacked during the night in an act of mindless vandalism. Although it wasn’t initially obvious what substance had been used, the indications were that petrol had been deliberately sprayed on the 2nd and 4th greens. More than a third of the grass had been affected on the 4th green. The damage on the 2nd green was more sporadic, with several irregular patches affected to varying degrees.

“Regardless of how we felt about the incident, our priority was to recover the greens as quickly and effectively as possible,” said Steve. “The surface damage was obvious to see; more important was the need to establish just how much toxicity had leached into the soil.”

Steve applied a method known as the ‘cress test’ to find out if there were any contaminants still present in the soil and

whether it would effect the growth of new grass. Cress was planted with differing depths of soil and left to see the effects on growth over a ten day period. The cress initially grew quite rapidly then, after a week, literally withered and died, indicating that there were still measures of contamination even at the deepest levels of the trial that had to be eradicated before overseeding could take place.

“Following the cress test we verti-drained the greens to a depth of 8” and added wetting agents with the hope of dispersing any toxic substances still in the soil,” explained Steve. “Two weeks later we carried out another cress test and this proved more successful. This was a month after the vandalism occurred. At this point we quadra-tined the whole of both greens with a Greencare Core Master with 5/8” tines removing cores at a depth of 2.5”. The greens were then ready to be re-seeded and topdressed."

A week later an intensive overseeding programme was
