W Happy Trails, 6 AUTHENTIC TEXAS

A new look at a history worth visiting

WELCOME to Authentic Texas, the maga- zine that focuses on heritage tourism in Texas. Five Texas Heritage Trail Regions have collaborated to produce this quarter- ly magazine and its online counterpart as vehicles

for presenting the people, places

and products that make traveling the state a unique experience. We intend to explore Texas from border to border, opening the door to fascinating stories for both our fellow Texans as well as visitors from afar. Texas is a big state, and travelers fre-

quently focus their travels on an ultimate destination, bypassing heritage experiences readily accessible along the way. We want to make travelers aware of the true stories that are told in our communities and the sur- rounding countryside. It’s our goal to encour- age people to recognize that while much of Texas can be seen from interstate highways, the Texas experience comes from taking that next exit. Little does even the average Texan suspect that a first-person heritage experience might be right around the corner. In this inaugural issue we’ve chosen Texas’s rich political heritage as a theme. It’s timely not

only because politics and government dominate current events nationwide this season, but also because the political story of Texas includes such iconic individuals as Sam Houston, whose home and office remain readily accessible in Huntsville; revered places such as Texas’s Independence Hall in Washington-on-the-Brazos; and transformative issues that played out on the national stage but whose roots are in Texas at the three presidential libraries and museums in Austin, College Station and Dallas. Additionally, we visit the seat of an independent nation whose flag was the seventh to fly

over Texas, and explore the legacies of such fascinating figures as Lady Bird Johnson, chef Tom Perini (whose experiences as caterer to presidents bear colorful retelling here) and more. Come along with us on our inaugural tour. We hope you’ll stick around.
