Sam Houston Memorial Museum Complex
Driving up or down Interstate 45 between Dallas and Houston, motorists are introduced to the spe- cial treasures of Huntsville by way of a stark white 67-foot sculpture of Sam Houston adjacent to the roadway. A brief stop at the City of Huntsville Visitor Center and Gift Shop opens the door to a host of interesting local sites that tell the story of Houston. The largest of them is Sam Houston Memorial Museum Complex, a part of Sam Houston State University, which

houses a large collection of artifacts and memorabilia. The exhibits dis- played here provide the very best context for learning about the life and times of Sam Houston. A tour of the museum and grounds starts at the Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center, which features rotating exhibits and an introductory film about Houston’s life. From there visitors follow a pathway through the grounds to view his restored Woodland Home, which he origi- nally built with his wife Margaret in 1848. Two of the principal out-
buildings to the home are his law office and a replica kitch- en. Although this is the original site for Woodland Home, adjacent to it is Steamboat House, which has been relocat- ed to the property. When Houston was elected gover- nor in 1859, he sold Woodland Home to pay off campaign debts, moved back to Huntsville and rented Steamboat House. It’s in this home that he lived until his death in 1863. Other buildings on the grounds include demonstration
