Today, vintage clubs honor the earliest heritage of the sport in Texas. Teams are formed much as they were a century and a half ago — with volunteers. Announcements and ads in local newspapers recruit men (and women … a modern-day departure from the 1800s when co-ed was never even imagined) to join up. These teams and the people working with them are doing so with more than just the game in mind — though yes, they do compete to win. They’re renewing passion for the sport and an appreciation for its permanent imprint on the history of the Lone Star State.

So whether you hail from the generation that once rushed home to watch Pee Wee Reese and Dizzy Dean on the TV set, are of an age to remember Curt Gowdy or Vin Scully over a transistor radio, or are young enough to relish your computer fantasy league, take a step back into the past.

Go watch the ballists in Farmers Branch or Rockwall or Boerne. Root for ’em to show a little ginger. And be sure to offer a spirited “Huzzah!” Now… striker to the line, and play ball!
