The legendary burger joint on Waco’s historic Traffic Circle

THIS CENTRAL TEXAS landmark has been serv- ing up some of the best burgers and shakes in the state since 1948. It didn’t start out as a burger stand, though. First it was a mobile canteen — the brainchild of Jack Schaevitz, who served ice cream and burgers to the folks stationed at James Connally Air Force Base in Waco.
Word soon spread about the cart’s mouthwatering
lunch offerings, and in 1949 the current loca- tion of the Health Camp made its debut on Waco’s historic traffic circle. For generations, the Health Camp has played host to sweethearts on dates, chil- dren’s birthday parties and vintage eatery enthusiasts, offering welcome respite for road-weary travelers. The building is the same inside and out as it was on opening day 68 years ago, which adds to the charm.
Walk up to the window to place your order, or, if you have time to spare, have a seat inside and get the full diner experience, complete with jukebox and classic red and yellow benches.
One glimpse at the menu is enough to trigger inescapable cravings, from hamburgers and chili dogs to Frito pie and chicken fried steak sandwiches. (All that extra cheese is technically guilt-free if it’s
called a “Super Health Burger,” right?) And, of course, no trip to Health Camp would be complete without indulging in an old-fashioned shake or malt. The joint offers more than 40 flavors of frozen custard ice cream, includ- ing treats like Chocolate Chip Cheesecake, Orange Dream Sickle and Toasted Marshmallow, just to name a few.
