LEGACY HISTORIES
A
Mission Dolores New State Historic Site
A SMALL mission built by the Spanish nearly 300 years ago has recently become an official Texas State Historic Site. Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de los Ais or, more simply, Mission Dolores, was built in the 1720s for the Ais Indians. As a way station on El Camino Real de los Tejas, the mission was a successful frontier settlement for 50 years. Today the site of Mission Dolores lies within the modern town of San Augustine in East Texas about 35 miles east of Nacogdoches, and is on El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail. While there are no historic above-ground

remains of Mission Dolores, the site has been confirmed by archeological investigations and historical records. Mission Dolores is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated State Antiquities Landmark. As part of the Historic Sites Program, Mission Dolores will benefit from THC staff expertise in archeology, history education and historic preser-
• vation.
Visitors can explore the site’s history at the museum, where interpretive displays tell the story of Mission Dolores. The property also has a campground, picnic area and group pavilion.
ON THE EL CAMINO REAL DE LOS TEJAS TRAIL: Mission Dolores was named a Texas state historic site in January 2016.
