Making golf travelpay

Golfreaks.com is an official partner of The PGA and the official travel company of the PGAs of Europe. The company’s director of golf pro relations, Adam Ward, explains how PGA professionals can significantly boost their income during the quiet winter months

How does Golfreaks.com work with

PGA members? In lots of ways! We help PGA professionals

organise escorted trips for their club members and clients – whether it’s a social break or a tuition trip. We also run Pro-Ams, with teams from across Europe taking part. In early 2016 there will be two in Spain, both playing at La Reserva, Finca Cortesin and Valderrama, plus our second ever event in the US, at the famous Pinehurst Resort.

Why would a Golf pro want to run a

tuition break? There are two main reasons really. Firstly,

travel is a great supplementary income; we guarantee the very best rates for PGA pros, there’s a nice five per cent commission on every booking plus their mark-up and the pro will usually stay and play for free. Just as importantly, taking trips away is the perfect way to strengthen relationships with club members.

So when is the best time to travel? Late October to the end of March is the ideal

time to travel. For the pro’s clients the attraction is getting away to enjoy some golf in the sunshine. And for the golf professional it is likely to be a quieter time of year allowing them the opportunity to be away from their day-to-day business.

How early should the process start? The earlier the better really! This gives the pro plenty of time to market the proposed trip to

their clients and will ensure they secure the facilities that best suit their needs. Golf pros generally see the majority of their clients through the summer and this is the best time to start advertising the trip for the forthcoming winter.

Where is best to go? We are the experts so I’d say please get in

touch to discuss your needs. We will identify what is best for the golf professional and his/her group, from the right destination and resort to the time of year to travel whilst giving considera- tion to the pro’s budget and ideal itinerary.

What’s required to make the booking? The dedicated golf pro travel team at

Golfreaks will do all of the hard work for the pro – checking availability, securing the best tee times, accommodation options and slots on the practice facilities. We can also arrange flights, car hire and any transfers. All that is needed from the golf pro is a £200 holding deposit to reserve the required space. They then have one month to collect the remainder of the deposit which is £35 per person. The full balance is due eight weeks prior to travel.

How does the golf professional

determine their mark-up? The pro’s mark-up is really determined by how

much structured tuition they plan to do during the break. We always suggest they consider what they would charge at home for lessons and use this as a guide to building in their fee whilst still making the overall package attractive to their

client base. Many Pros add on £30 to £50 per person per day to cover their time plus they receive the five per cent commission from Golfreaks.com. For a week away to Spain or Portugal with a group of eight, the pro can make upward of £2,000.

Why would a pro use Golfreaks.com

and not arrange the trips themselves? They could do it, but it’s hard work… and

simply not as profitable! Golfreaks.com has been the leader in golf travel since 1998 and with just a single call you can take advantage of our expertise and relationships with hotels and venues around the world. Being an official partner of The PGA as well as the official travel company of the PGAs of Europe, and both ATOL and ABTA bonded, we are trusted by pros across Europe.

What would you say to any pro

thinking about taking a trip? Just give us a call… I promise you that once

you do one of these trips, you’ll wonder why you waited so long!
