UCD Law
“The BCL Maîtrise is a prestigious dual Law degree which enables students to acquire qualifications in two legal systems. Moreover, this unique programme is highly regarded by employers in France, Ireland and further afield. While this programme is work intensive and requires a high level of dedication, it opens doors to particular further opportunities. Having become fluent in French, I have interned in highly reputed commercial law firms in Ireland and France. I have also pursued my passion in European affairs, participating in simulations of the European Parliament in Estonia and Turkey, as well as summer law schools in Spain and Portugal through my membership of ELSA (European Law Students’ Association).”

BCL/Maîtrise Law Dual Degree –
BCL/Maîtrise (NFQ Level 8) CAO Code DN615
Why is this course for me? This programme offers a unique opportunity for immersion in two of the world’s major legal cultures: the common law and the civil law. After four years of study, you will obtain two law degrees, one in Irish law and one in French law. You receive a Bachelor of Civil Law degree from UCD, and a French Law degree, the Maîtrise en Droit, from either the Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) or the Université Toulouse 1 Capitole. The Maîtrise en Droit is considered to be a master’s level course.
The BCL/Maîtrise is an intensive programme aimed at highly motivated and ambitious students. Graduates of the programme will have acquired an exceptional range of legal and linguistic skills.
What will I study?
First & Second Year You’ll take the essential Irish law subjects required for recognition by the professional bodies, including:
Constitutional Law¬ Contract Law¬ Tort ¬ EU Law¬ Criminal Law
You’ll also be introduced to French Constitutional Law and French Civil Law (taught through French), and will be given an opportunity for advanced French language training.
Third & Fourth Year Third and fourth years are spent in one of our two partner universities. The subjects studied are determined by those institutions.
– Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) (see
www.u-paris2.fr/)
– Université Toulouse 1 Capitole (see
www.univ-tlse1.fr/)
The intensive nature of this programme means you will not have time to take external modules as part of UCD Horizons. For the same reason you are not required to take General Introduction to Legal Studies or General Introduction to Comparative Legal Studies.
You’ll attend lectures and tutorials, in addition to engaging in study and preparatory work. A sample timetable can be viewed at
www.ucd.ie/myucd/law.
Assessment is through a combination of end-of-semester examinations, essays and group work projects.
Career & Graduate Study Opportunities BCL/Maîtrise graduates can progress to professional legal training in Ireland or France. With fluency in the French language and a detailed knowledge of the French legal system, graduates of this programme are ideally prepared for careers as “lawyer linguists” in EU institutions.
BCL/Maîtrise graduates often choose to undertake postgraduate study in EU or International Law. Several graduates have obtained full scholarships to the renowned College of Europe, in Bruges, Belgium.
KEY FACT Every June we hold a one-day Summer School which gives 5th year pupils a taste of how we teach law. We also host a Law Open Evening every October for secondary school pupils and their parents to meet law students and law lecturers, and to listen to some lectures.
