Niagara’s 2.8-million-litre average. Mist rises up to 500 feet above Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), which has water pouring in from three sides. There are viewpoints above, but the best is from a small boat beneath the falls.

All passengers are given

ponchos, but they will still get completely soaked. Holland America Line and Oceania Cruises both offer land tours from Buenos Aires to the Iguaçu Falls (flying time is just under two hours). Oceania’s two-night trip includes a zodiac cruise beneath the falls, one night in a hotel and an eco-train ride to see the Garganta del Diablo. Prices range from £1,226 per person for two nights based on Marina’s December 2015 cruise from Rio to Buenos Aires. Princess Cruises combines a night at Iguaçu Falls in a five- night post-cruise tour from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro. From £3,784 per person, excluding flights but including a cruise from Valparaiso

to Buenos Aires departing January 18, 2016.

THE AMAZON Arguments rage as to whether the Nile or Amazon is the longest river in the world but what is for sure is that the Amazon reigns supreme when it comes to water, accounting for about one-fifth of the world’s total water flow. In the dry season, the Amazon can be more than six miles wide; during the wet that increases to 30 miles or more. There are two ways to cruise

the river – on an ocean-going ship that sails from the Atlantic to Manaus and then turns back (Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ Hanseatic is exceptional as it cruises all the way to Iquitos) or on a small vessel that explores the river and its tributaries beyond Iquitos. Companies, including Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Seabourn, offer voyages

up the Amazon as part of a longer cruise around South America and a few (including P&O Cruises and Fred Olsen) have dedicated Amazon cruises, usually sailing round- trip from Barbados (see pages 36 to 39). For clients who want to get

close to the rainforest and its native Indians, as well as monkeys, sloths and birds, check out Aqua Expeditions or Avalon Waterways, which offers a 12-day holiday round- trip from Lima that includes a three-night river cruise with a tour taking in Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. From £5,355 per person, departing May 30, including flights. Titan Travel has a 13-day Amazon Adventure that includes seven nights on the 30-passenger Manatee Amazon Explorer and four nights in Quito. From £2,999 per person departing September 17 including flights.
