SANCTUARY ANANDA
SANCTUARY RETREATS ENTERED THE RIVER CRUISE MARKET
IN MYANMAR IN NOVEMBER 2014
SIZE: 61 metres long.
PASSENGERS: 42, based on double occupancy. There are 44 crew.
CABINS: 21, all outside with floor-to-ceiling windows and most with balconies. The Owners Suite is the largest cabin on the
Ayeyarwady at 721 square feet. It
has separate bedroom and sitting areas and a large bathroom. All suites come with an iPad and free Wi-Fi. However, internet access in Myanmar is very poor.
DINING: The Talifoo Restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch buffets and waiter-service dinner. Once per cruise, the crew sets up a buffet dinner on a sandbank under the stars. Breakfasts are moderate, but are more than made up for by the amazing dishes created for lunch and dinner by chef Sumet. Expect fish, chicken and rice, lightly spiced and full of flavour.
FACILITIES: A lounge and bar on the top deck is the main gathering point for entertainment (favourites include lectures about Myanmar’s politics and history and lessons in how to wear a longhi, the long skirt favoured by local men and women. Cooking demonstrations are held in the Talifoo Restaurant. There is a small pool, a library and gym. The two-room spa offers Burmese and Thai massages, body scrubs and a 45-minute facial. Prices range from $60 for reflexology.
DECOR: Sanctuary Ananda was built in Yangon, in Myanmar and finished in a Burmese style by local craftsmen. Rooms are decorated with traditional lacquerware, silk textiles and teak furnishings.
MARKET POSITION: Ananda’s three and four-day itineraries make a perfect add-on to a land-based holiday in Myanmar or Thailand. It’s a way to slow down the sightseeing while still seeing local villages, markets and sites in Mandalay and Bagan. Target well-travelled holidaymakers with deep pockets aged 40 and up.
ITINERARIES: Sanctuary Ananda is sailing three and four-night cruises between Bagan and Mandalay that can be combined to create a seven-night voyage. There is also a handful of 10- and 11-night cruises to Bhamo, Yangon and on the Chindwin River. Prices are from £758 per person cruise-only including excursions, soft drinks, local beer and selected wine at dinner.
