ANIMAL MAGNETISM IN AFRICA
Voyages to Antiquity takes safaris in its stride
Voyages to Antiquity is shrugging off its cultural mantel with a selection of safari-themed cruises during a debut visit to South Africa in winter 2015/16. The company is offering a 19-day Christmas and New Year cruise round-trip from Cape Town from December 18 to January 5. It will visit Port Elizabeth for an excursion to Addo Elephant Park and Richards’ Bay, where an overnight stay allows tours to Hluhluwe Game Reserve and St Lucia Nature Reserve. Most excursions are included in the price, in keeping with the company’s philosophy that
destination is all important. The company operates one vessel, the 350-passenger Aegean Odyssey. Both ports and excursions are
also offered with a 14-day voyage round-trip from Cape Town on January 4. A 26-day cruise from Cape Town to Colombo in Sri Lanka will also include three days in the Seychelles, where there will be tours to the Marine National Park in Mahé and to the birdlife in Praslin and La Digue. Variety Cruises, sold in the UK by
Seafarer, is incorporating wildlife into cruising in Madagascar during July and August 2015.
Hurtigruten heads to Svalbard for the polar bears
Hurtigruten is to become the first cruise line to venture to chilly Norwegian archipelago Svalbard for some springtime polar bear watching next year with two 10-day cruises round-trip from Tromso. The voyages, on

Spitsbergen, as well as the North Cape, the most northerly point on the mainland. Prices start at £1,222 per person cruise-only, with flights and transfers from £366. Hurtigruten has also launched a new selection of spring, summer and winter excursions for passengers booking its voyages along the coast of Norway from Bergen to
Kirkenes and back. A biking trip in Trondheim, central Norway, includes the world’s only cycle lift. Pedalling along the Nid River costs from £43 per person, while kayaking on the Nid is priced from £97 per person. A rigid inflatable boat (RIB) ride in search of whales costs from £232 per person. The single supplement has been dropped from selected 12-day round-trip Bergen cruises for departures before the end of March.
