south america deserves to be better known for its cruise product, writes Jane Archer
W
hich cruise destination has everything, from premier-league cities and centuries-old history and culture to world-famous beaches? No, not the Mediterranean – although it does have
all those attributes. The answer is Latin America, a worthy rival to the Med when it comes to attractions, yet probably the least-known cruise region, especially as far as the UK is concerned. Where the Med attracts some 650,000 British cruise passengers a year, according to Clia UK & Ireland, South America is bundled with ‘other areas’ including Asia and the Middle East that together muster less than one-third of that number. The drawback, of course, is the long – and therefore pricey – flight from Britain to pick up a cruise from, say,
Buenos Aires, Valparaiso (the port for Santiago de Chile) or Rio de Janeiro. Many Britons also steer clear of the region due to
fears about safety and quality – a couple of negatives that fall into the lap of any good cruise agent. By taking a cruise, clients can enjoy the wonders of South and Central America secure in the knowledge they have a safe and comfortable place to stay each night (their ship!) and can join organised tours at each port. A cruise is also without doubt the best way to see a lot of Latin America in one holiday – especially if clients have the time and money for a voyage around the whole continent. Circumnavigations usually start and end in Miami in
January and take from six weeks to two months. In that time passengers experience everything from
