for Student Affairs, North Dakota State University, has also called upon the services of a CVB, in her case, the Bismarck-Mandan Convention & Visitors Bureau, to help with everything from indi- vidual visitors to small meetings and large conferences. Sperling acknowledges that while people are traveling to the university for a specific purpose, they are always interested in ex- ploring the local area. With the CVBs help they are able to provide restaurant listings and recommendations, condensed maps of the area, lists of attractions and other commonplace things. The CVB has also been helpful with bids and suggestions for offsite meetings that they cannot host at the University. She experienced this recently when they had a client who want-


ed to put in a national bid. Sperling commented, “The CVB was instrumental in providing a meeting place for us to discuss the lo- gistics, as well as providing the statistics about the region, city and number of available hotel rooms, among other things.” In this case there was a big requirement for both on-campus


housing and standard accommodations requiring a block of hotel rooms. A strong advocate for working with CVBs based on her experiences, Sperling shares, “The CVB is very supportive of the University whether we are recruiting a new staff person or working with a very large group. They are great partners and collaborators.”

Kristy Cox, Senior Manager, Events, USA Volleyball, works with CVBs, including Meet Minneapolis, for just that reason. “We work with CVBs pri- marily because we feel they have the pulse of their communities and they can best help us identify with local vendors and be our best advocate with the convention center and hotels. They are great at getting the word out to their community that we are com- ing. If we have any issues we are experiencing prior to and during the event they are a great resource and typically work to find the best ways to help us solve the problem. They are also great at facili- tating options for our attendees to have memorable experiences in their cities during their down time.” When dealing with back to back meetings, Ann Barrett, CAE, President, Conners/Barrett & Co., LLC, also finds CVBs, like the Wisconsin Dells CVB, to be a lifeline before, and during, her meet- ings. “CVBs are a phenomenal resource! They save me a great deal of time starting with RFPs as well as help throughout the event with onsite registration assistance, visitor guides, name badges, speaker gifts and bonus items like pens, note pads and other pro- motional material. They’ve helped me with everything from their calendar of events to media contacts and all sorts of good things.” There is no better expert or asset than the local CVB when it


comes to a city’s resources and attractions. CVBs can help during each and every stage of your event to help bring meetings to a new level.
